Going to University in Christchurch, Arthurs Pass was one of the closest escapes to the wild. Only 2hours drive from Chch - it's really easy to get to.
There are too many walks to talk about so I'll hit on some of my favorites.
Talk to the team in the DOC office - they will let you know the best track for your ability and current conditions. Buy yourself a Map - and know how to use it.

Pros and Cons

Pros:Remote.... and adventure is right there.
Cons:Can get cold and wet.... and then there are the sandflies.
In a nutshell:The further from the road - the better it is....

The glow worms are beautiful...never seen them in the wild. And this looks like a great place for hiking too!
