A WEEKEND IN EDINBURGH

by Duffelgirl - last update: Sep 28, 2003

Edinburgh Castle
Edinburgh is quite unlike any other city I have been to in the UK. As the eyes feast over the big beautiful old buildings blending with the new, there is a sense of magic. The atmosphere is romantic and exciting, chatter feels the air with an array of colourful accents -, the strongest of course being the lovely Scottish accent.

Another unique feature about this city is the smell!! Usually I don't enjoy going around whiffing polluted city streets, but Edinburgh (to me, no one else seems to agree!) had an aroma of warm toasting crumpets which you can catch drifting on the westerly breeze (mmmmmmm)! I believe it is the smell of yeast from a nearby brewery.

The purpose of our 4 day visit to Edinburgh was to go to Murrayfield and see the All Backs play against Scotland (New Zealand won 37 - 6). Gawping at Jonah Lomu running down the pitch with his bulging muscles was worth the admission price alone! It was wonderful to be amongst the thousands of people streaming out of the Murrayfield stadium like a giant tidal wave onto Prince's street heading for the many drinking haunts.%s

Pros:"Food, culture, great atmosphere."
Cons:"A little on the chilly side!"
In A Nutshell:"Cold, northern... one of the most beautiful cities I have seen at night. Dominated by a castle on the hill. Whiskey, single malt. Would be perfect if it was 500 miles south, or another 30 years of global warming (A few words from Greg!!)"

Interesting! I always thought the "sos" was just normal brown sauce [which I don't like so I never had it!] but you learn something new every day! And its square [well I usually call its slice & links here in Ayrshire] sausage for me!
