We did not book any accommodation in advance, we just went straight to the Tourist Information Centre (opposite the train station - over the bridge and just up the main road).
The friendly, efficient Tourist Information man ensured we had a local map, some ideas on where to go and most importantly a room for the next 2 nights.
Unique Qualities: The rooms were big and the breakfasts were scrumptious. The room had a balcony and the views of mountains and snow covered fields were fantastic. It worked out about £10 each a night (utter bargain).
There are loads of places to stay in Berchtesgaden, do go to the Tourist Information because the accommodation they can find are of good quality and they can ring around for you (with the added advantage of speaking German!). You can also tell them what price range suits you.
