And the winner is ... Sydney
After you have read this page, please visit my photo travelogues, which will show you some of the places that I have mentioned.
Sydney is my home. I was born in Sydney, grew up in Sydney, live and work in Sydney. I have lived in China for a year, and travelled to some fantastic places both in Australia and overseas. For other places in Australia, please take a look at my pages for other locations. You can read some history of Australia on my Australia page.
Sydney is not the capital of Australia -- Canberra is, but Sydney has the biggest population in Australia, and it was the first town / city to be colonised by the British. Therefore, it is the oldest colonised city of Australia.
Sydney is a large city, and its suburbs are sprawled out over a wide distance from the Pacific coast to the foot of the Blue Mountains in the west. You need several days to see all that Sydney and its outlying suburbs has to offer.
Compared to many places that I have travelled to, I think Sydney is a relatively clean city. My throat does not get irritated from pollution here in Sydney like it did in China and in Los Angeles. We do have pollution, and we do have the serious problem with the hole in the Ozone layer being above us here, but the pollution seems much less here than in many other cities.
Sydney has many wonderful attributes, namely, multiculturalism, cleanliness, pretty good weather, big blue skies, great beaches, great seafood, and Australians in general have a reputation for being easy going and laid back, yet hard working.
Believe it or not, but I was NOT in Sydney for the 2000 Olympics!! I was up in Changchun, China. My view of the Olympics was through the Chinese media's eyes. Needless to say, I saw endless games of Badminton, Table Tennis, Diving, Gymnastics and anything else that the Chinese athletes excelled at. :)) Oh well, can never see too much Badminton ... LOL :) On the other hand, when I got out the old Badminton racquet on campus -- it was a lot of fun, and it really gives a deceptive all-over work out. You end up with sore muscles that you never knew you had!! :)))
Look at my Tips below for great places to visit and things to do when you are in Sydney. |
| | Sydney Opera House Here is an icon of Sydney, the Sydney Opera House, located at Bennelong Point, Circular Quay. You can reach the Opera House easily by train (Circualr Quay Station, on the City Circle Train line), by ferry (a short walk from the piers at Circular Quay) and by foot (a short walk from The Rocks end of George Street). |
