Portsmouth is a pretty little town on the Piscataqua (pronounced with the emphasis on the CAT) River. Its cobbled streets and red brick Colonial architecture reminded me of Annapolis, Maryland, only on a much smaller scale. It's just across the river from Kittery, Maine, an hour from Boston, Massachusetts, and two hours from Vermont, so it's convenient for touring other New England states.
I was there for the VT Portsmouth meeting in September 2007, but I'd like to go back someday and spend more time exploring the surrounding area. |
| | Market Square is the center of old Portsmouth. It's easy to find when you're walking around -- just look for the spire of the North Church.
There are a lot of shops and restaurants around the Square, and the trolley stops there. |
Kittery, Maine, is just across the river from Portsmouth. | | | View of Kittery from the Portsmouth side |
