City of Aloha

by Rixie - last update: Jun 7, 2006

Waikiki Beach, with Diamond Head in the distance
Honolulu, on the island of Oahu, is the capital city of the only state in the US that was once a monarchy. There's always something interesting or exciting to do there.

Tour the royal palace and follow in the footsteps of kings and queens, or see their belongings on exhibit at the Bishop Museum. Make a pilgrimage to Pearl Harbor, where the USS Arizona still lies underwater. Lie on a warm, sandy beach, take surfing lessons, hand-feed fish. Go shopping for aloha shirts or shell necklaces, watch a hula show or listen to a concert of Hawaiian music. Inhale the perfume of tropical flowers, eat ono (Hawaiian for delicious) ethnic foods, experience the spirit of aloha. The worst part of your trip will be going to the airport for your flight home!

Quick explanation

This page will not include many photos. When I go to Honolulu, I spend my time visiting family and friends and tend to take photos of them, not of the places where we meet. But my friend Jan, who recently researched a trip to Portland on VT, has persuaded me that information is just as valuable without photos.

Personal Aloha Oe

Leaving Honolulu is always very emotional for me. I feel like Emily in Our Town, bidding farewell to Grover’s Corners.

My version would run along these lines:

Goodbye, trees
- palm, monkeypod, banyan, and mango

Goodbye, flowers
– hibiscus, plumeria, bird of paradise, and vanda orchid

Goodbye, sea and sky
and rainbows and carved green mountains

Goodbye, muumuus and aloha shirts,
and slippers on the doormat

Goodbye, laulau and poi,
saimin and sushi

Goodbye, red dirt and lava rock walls

Goodbye, da kine steel guitar and slack key, yeah?

Goodbye, bones of my ancestors
and strength of my ohana

Goodbye, land of mahalo and aloha –
until we meet again.

Wow, What a Beautiful place. My brother often visits the Big Island. Maybe one of these days I will find the time to go also.

I really enjoyed reading your pages, that maze sounds like lots of fun, I'm like you though. I would have to tie a string somewhere to find my way back
