Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Bring warm clothes with you. San Francisco is located on the water, and even on the hottest summer day, the fog can roll in quickly. When that happens, the wind comes up, and the temperature can plummet as much as 20 degrees in a short time. There's a famous quote that's attributed, mistakenly, to Mark Twain: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." Regardless of who said or didn't say it, it's true. I would never go to The City wearing shorts, or without a jacket. When we exchanged homes with a Dutch family, we warned them about this, but they couldn't believe it was true. They later reported that by midafternoon on their first jaunt to SF, the fog came in and sent them running for the car. :)
