Sacramento appears in front of you unexpectedly. You’ve been driving past miles and miles of flat, marshy ground on either side of Highway 80, when suddenly, the skyline of a city rears up in the distance, like a mirage.

It’s not the prettiest city in the world, but there’s always something interesting going on. In Sacramento you can catch a glimpse of California’s past and its present. Visit Sutter’s Fort and the State Railroad Museum and tour the State Capitol building, where Governor Arnie hangs out. Take a water taxi ride, catch a basketball game at the Arco Arena, listen to some cool music at the Jazz Jubilee, watch an IMAX movie. The capital has activities to keep every age group entertained.

If you’re in California and have a hankering for glitter, visit Los Angeles. If you yearn for charm, visit San Francisco. But if you want to see where the real power in the state is concentrated, visit Sacramento.
