Palo Alto is about half an hour's drive south of San Francisco. As you can see from this photo, it's a mixture of old, established neighborhoods and new business districts. It is probably best known as the site of Stanford University.

This community garden is tucked away in a corner of a park in Palo Alto. Gardeners pay a fee to cultivate a plot, and I'm told that there is a waiting list for this particular garden.

The Sheraton Palo Alto (see hotel tip) has some lovely koi in a pond.

I think you missed the essence of Palo Alto: Stanford, high tech industry, upper class intelligence, rich public schools, high class restaurants with SF chefs, money, money, money. It is a different world then most of us know.

Hi Rixie - I'll keep this in mind next time I'm in Palo Alto. Were you always a fiver for this location? Maybe I'm just more aware, now that I finally got my five!

My main memory of Palo Alto is the fantastic restaurants. Fortunately I was on expenses while I was there because they were also very expensive.
