"Storybook Beach Town" Carmel-by-the-Sea by Rixie

Carmel-by-the-Sea Travel Guide: 422 reviews and 1,232 photos

Carmel-by-the-Sea began as an artists' community in the early 20th century, attracting not only artists but also musicians, writers, and academics.

It's now a charming town full of shops and restaurants, and a popular Northern California weekend getaway.

Ocean Avenue is the main street downtown. You can explore the intersecting streets or follow it down to the beach.

Just a few blocks away from the crowded downtown area, there are some beautiful homes. I enjoy sightseeing there as well.

I loved Carmel-by-Sea when we visited about eight years ago. It's quaint loveliness never seems to change. You really captured it well with your pics and commentary. And what an awesome place to celebrate an anniversary.

looks a great place to visit. I'm normally wary of places that have 'on sea' in their title - they are usually dumps. Guess this is the exception that proves the rule.
