A City Of Views
San Francisco! The City by the Bay. Both a municipality and a county, like Honolulu and Nantucket, San Francisco offers the visitor and resident an astounding array of diversions for every taste and budget. The Chinatown is one of the largest anywhere, with a fascinating selection of restaurants, from dim sum to formal banquets. North Beach is the Italian neighborhood, where I stayed, and is not to be outdone for cozy little coffee shops to al fresco dining. San Francisco is a very outdoors city, the people who live here are always out running and walking. The steep hills are legendary, and offer the best views of the surrounding bay and hills of Marin County. My advice to a first time visitor is book into your hostel or hotel and just start walking. Walk everywhere. Walk along the Embarcadero along the waterfront up to Fisherman's Wharf, Fort Mason, Marina District and Golden Gate Bridge. The city's long tradition of liberal politics and tolerance is generally firmly established, although a homeless population estimated at between eight and fifteen thousand has worn out the big hearts of many of the city's residents. And this week, perhaps inspired by events in Massachusetts, San Francisco city officials married over 3000 same gender couples at the San Francisco City Hall. It remains to be seen whether the state government and courts will support the action, but irregardless, San Francisco is sure to have something to keep EVERYONE happy!

Been lucky with our visits to San Francisco in winters Had lovely weather each time. Apart from the magnificent Golden Gate & equally so Bay still can't put my finger on why it's one of my top 5 fave U.S. cities (along with Chicago, NY, Boston & Seattle)
