A beautiful trip from Garmisch to Schwangau

Castle Neuschwanstein

Neuschwanstein
Within the Southern part of Germany and also very easily accessible from the Tyrolian part of Austria is the area of the castles of King Ludwig II who tried to imitate King Louis XIV of France (aka the "Sun King" for his glamour). Because of its vicinity to Garmisch I placed this entry under this small, but well known city. Also the highest mountain of Germany (Zugspitze) is accessible from Garmisch by cable car.

Anybody visiting this area should never miss the opportunity to visit the castles. Neuschwanstein is most likely the best known among them due to its architecture and is many times the background scene for leaflets, posters, commericals and movies alike, but the most beautyful is the palace Linderhof.

If you can arrange it, avoid going there on a beautiful sunny weekend or during vacation time in Germany. It is no fun at all to be among this many people. No parking space, the horse driven cars to bring you up to the castle are all occupied, the tour through the castle makes you wait in endles queues, prices are up, food is louzy. Best time to select is during the week on a slight overcast day. Walking to the hill of the castle is easier and also to the neigboring hill top to shoot with a 200-300 mm lens.
Hohenschwangau

Palace Hohenschwangau

Another castle situated on a hill in this region is along the same road when coming from Neuschwanstein, actually very near to the German Alps. This region is beautifully colored during fall, one of my favorite seasons of the year
