Compared with Lisbon I like Porto much better. Most of the harbors along the North Atlantic Ocean have a prefix or Suffic in their names: for example Porto Santo, Porto Seguro, Porto Alegre.
Firmly Porto stands by itsself. The city along river Duoro has obtainend European Cultural Status in 2001 and has no comparison with any other harbor city of which I know.
This place really offers natural protection. The city is virtually squeezed between Rocks and river and looks cold to persons arriving there for the first time. Rough black granite rocks is the building material of most of the houses which are appearing from the fogs of the river like stairs along the hill.
The best I liked personally were the excellent wines which were kept in the huge cellars of our agent and one of the famous wine merchants of the famous Port-Wine. Try it with a good cheese. |
