South the Friedrichstrasse the architect Philipp Johnson built the American Business center directly at the former Checkpoint Charlie, formerly the border crossing to the German Democratic Republic. There you see the contemporary art of international importance also in the cabinets of the German Bank.

To see the old pictures made me wonder what kind of thoughts the people had when excaping from East Berlin. "Freedom!" See the history and incidents that happened along the Wall. Original objects from successful escapes under and over ground are displayed. Open every day from 9.00 am to 10.00 pm

Berlin-Mitte: Controversial Holocaust Memorial

Get the story behind the incredible controversy surrounding it. It was inaugurated on May 10, 2005, designed by US architect Peter Eisenmann. This monument commemorating the murdered European Jews is a field of stelae, a labyrinth for visitors to walk through 2711 grey concrete blocks of widely varying height from 0,20 m to 4.70 m. Made me quiet and thinking.

Join some toursts for a great time every day in summer and twice daily during peak season. Meet at meeting point East (Hackerscher Markt). The size of groups are limited to ensure you get the best out of it. The guides will bring you to Tiergarten, the new furistic government quarter. The bikes are brand new. It's not dangerous at all as all tour are exclusively through parks and on bike paths. Usually the group ends up in a beer garden with a cold drink and firendships are made.

Between the river Spree and Kupfergraben is the world-famous Museum Island. It is the home to superöative art collections vialling those of the Louvre in Paris (France), the Uffizio in Florence (Italy) or even the State Museum in St. PÜetersburg (Russia) There is an extensive restaurantion going on and it will take possibly years for all the works of art to be back on their original locations, which the war and the subsequent partition of the city had dispersed.

Berlin-Mitte: Occasionally Memorials of Killings

Watching the tourist ships passing the bank of the river Spree I observed again suprising memorials. People trying to escape from the former communist government of Eastern Germany were simply killed when crossing the river. These signs you will see near the new and modern representative buildings not far from the Reischstag. The white crosses show with the names and dates of death of people who died attempting to cross the border lines. There are similar memorials along the former perimeter of the Wall. The empty black space is for a person whose data are unknown. The momuments have a heavy impact on visitors.
