The name 'Serengeti' is derived from the Maasai word 'Siringet,' meaning endless plains. As you pass through this vast land (that covers 14, 763 sq. kms) you can't help but immediately start feeling that sense of wonderment.
The Serengeti puts you right in the middle where man was born out of nature and into nature.
After 10 hours of driving along very bumpy, dusty unpaved roads, we pass through rainstorms along the Ngorongoro crater rim that quickly turn into thick fog through the edge of the Olduvai Gorge and then absorbed by the blistering sun as we enter the gates of the Serengeti.
It is the most extraodinary, beautiful, and luminous cohabitation of man with beast and beast with beast. It is where no energy is wasted by Man and Beast. You cannot help but be fixated on nature and the animals in this habitat.....
It's a Voyeur's Paradise. |

| | A New Dimension Close your eyes.
Imagine you had just hiked and climbed for 7 days straight. After 6 days you reached an elevation of 19,340 ft, and had to literally slide down the mountain in only 1 day. Your muscles are well past the point of exhaustion but your mind cannot travel less than 50mph with all that adrenaline penetrating your veins.
Now imagine somebody lays you down smack dab in the middle of Nature. The only sign of civilization is the group of gazelle grazing in the grass 30 ft. away. You smell the freshness of the grasslands and you hear 50 different species of birds right above you.
As all of the soreness in your muscles are literally rubbed away in what feels like some sort of metaphysical orgasm, you forget where you are and remember why you are there: To live in that moment.
This was the view I had from the terrace of my tent where we camped and where I received the most exquisite massage after just finishing the climb on Kilimanjaro. A make-shift spa in the middle of 'everywhere' in the Serengeti. I was transported to a new dimension that morning.
Life doesn't get any better than that..... |
