The Mistress of the Marae

Legend says that Raiatea and Tahaa were originally one island until a giant eel swallowed a young girl. Possessed by her spirit, the enraged creature broke through the surface of the earth and caused a giant gush in the sea.

The impact of the water cut the island into two and formed the islands of Raiatea and Tahaa.

Raiatea's significance to the islands is that it was the religious and cultural center of Polynesia. Polynesians would travel as far away as New Zealand just to come worship at the traditional temple, or marae as it is known in Polynesia.

Raiatea By Night

Uturoa is the island's capital and port. It's the 2nd largest town in French Polynesia........and consists of one main street.

It's a sleepy town. Although, by day it's the central location where the locals take care of their business, at night when the lights go down, the lapping waves of the lagoon is all you hear.

Raiatea Relaxation

Whether it's napping on a bench along the harbor, or pulling up a table to have a glass of Ricard to go with our game of Chess, Raiatea proved to be the kind of "sleepy" town we were looking for.

What a lovely page. The hotel tip was especially good. Loved your story about looking for a beach for some R&R.

Yes the intricacies of beach squatting. Yesterday in Manahattan Beach, where to squat was key, however, it wasn't about finding a sandy spot but finding the best "view".
