In the 17C and18C Ingrandes was a major port on the River Loire. From the south bank of the river the low walls which protect the town when the river is high can be seen. Its position just south of the Breton border made Ingrandes an important centre for smuggling salt. Anjou was subject to the salt tax (gabelle) which was particularly unpopular since salt was the only means of preserving food. Brittany, however, was exempt. |
| | The Church The modern church (1956) is built of granite with a slate bell tower. The huge glass bays were made by the Ateliers Loire after cartoons by Bertrand. |
