Opened in 1683 by Prince Esterhazy, the Esterhazy Keller (cellar) provides a rare combination of history, excellent food, Austrian wines and a central location -- all at very reasonable prices. Though enormous, this underground restaurant is usually packed in the evenings, mostly with local guests, plus a few scatterred tourists.

First, find a table and order drinks*. Next, order your food at the counter next to the entrance. If your German is rusty, you can point, but I recommend the Rostbraten with Sauerkraut and Knoedel. Last, enjoy your meal and the real Viennese atmosphere.

If you're lucky, the other diners will be in a festive mood and might even sing a few Austrian folk songs.

*Austrian wine is the specialty, and I would recommend a Weisser Spritzer with most of the meals available at the Keller. The best way to order the wine is by the fraction of a liter. A quarter liter of wine plus a quarter liter of soda water should get you started. Careful -- they go down easily, but pack a good punch!

Favorite Dish: Rostbraten, Sauerkraut und Knoedel (pork roast, sauerkraut and dumpling).

The roast is delicious and tender. Combined with hearty warm sauerkraut and a big knoedel, you'll enjoy the quintessential Austrian meal for around 10 Euros. Go back for more if you're still hungry!

Directions: From Stephansdom, walk to the end of the Graben. Continue down the small cobblestone street and take the second left into a narrow alleyway. The Keller will be on your left.
