Raritan Avenue, downtown Highland Park
Highland Park stands apart when one thinks of typical small towns in the USA. It is a town that is influenced by so many cultures, genres, and ages that it has become a very diverse place to live.

Highland Park shares a border with the town of New Brunswick. New Brunswick is the home to Rutgers University and also houses a theatre district and serves as a small financial center being home to Johnson & Johnson headquarters. As such, a good number of the residents of this town either attend or work at Rutgers University. My wife and I both moved here while we were still in school because it was so close to school.

In my opinion, the town is predominantly Jewish. However, African Americans, Chinese, Koreans, Hispanics, Eastern Europeans, and Africans make a good presence as well. What's best is that this town has little or no racial problems, and it is why so many people can get along here.

Highland Park has become an ideal place to live as it is close to 3 major highways and one of the major train lines (NJ Transit's Northeast Corridor Line) stopping twice in the vicinity. Also, the diversity of the town has allowed for a very warm atmosphere. Add to this a great school system and very high safety record and it's no wonder rent is so expensive.

Most people don't give Highland Park a second thought as a place to visit but it's where I've lived since from 1999 to 2005. It was a great place to call home!

You describe your restaurant experiences so well. I also had a look at them on your Barcelona page and I laughed to read about how you ate in a cloud of smoke. That was certainly our experience, too.

Nice hometown page! I couldn't do a better job at detailed restaurant descriptions. Next time I'm up there, that'll be 6 more restaurant tips for my New Jersey page!
