Fitzroy Island is a rainforested national park just 45 minutes from Cairns (by boat), It offers visitors good diving, sunny beaches, rainforest treks, a decent diversity of wildlife to observe, and even a nude beach. On Fitzroy Island, you find what is probably the most affordable island resort on the Great Barrier Reef. Upon approach to the island, you can walk up to the pool area where there a couple of shops for your basic beach necessities, food, and also to arrange your diving or other beach/ocean related activites. Several islands dot the Great Barrier Reef, and only a select few have regular visitors to them.

Fitzroy Island, a continental island not reef island, has as much to offer as many of the other islands, but it is big enough that you can find the peace, tranquility, and seclusion some of us search for on our vacations. If ever in the area, it's an Island worth the Day Trip there or even a night or two on the island itself.

Pros and Cons

Pros:Cheaper and closer than most of the other islands on the GBR.
Cons:Beaches are coral not sand
In a nutshell:Fitzroy makes for an excellent day trip or two day trip from Cairns.
