Park around Schloss Nymphenburg
The French style park surrounding the castle is a sight itself. There is a lake with a fountain and swans swimming around, lots of flowers and plants and many beautiful statues. I just read somewhere that in wintertime the statues are covered though...
Directions: Surrounding the Schloss Nymphenburg.
Schloss Nymphenburg
Schloss Nymphenburg is a huge, impressive baroque castle just outside the centre of Munich. It served as a summer palace to the famous Wittelsbach family.
Here lived also King Ludvig II who had the "fairytale castle" Neuschwanstein built. There's also the Royal Stables Museum, a grotto and other palaces like Amalienburg.
Directions: Some 8 km from the centre, take a tram.
Maypole and beer garden at Viktualienmarkt
Many of the attracting stalls in the Viktualienmarkt actually sell speciality foods, rather than the necessities. Besides the stalls there are also statues, a decorative maypole and a beer garden.
Directions: Close to The Old City Hall.
The Nationaltheater actually houses the Munich Opera.
Directions: On the east side of Max-Joseph Platz.
On the western side of the Odeonsplatz is Theatinerkirche St Kajetan, built between 1663 and 1690, to celebrate the birth of Prince Max Emanuel.
Address: Odeonsplatz
The twin towers of Frauenkirche
Frauenkirche (built in 15th century) is easy to recognise with its' 99- meter high twin towers. You may not construct buildings in the Altstadt that would be higher than these towers.
There's a legend, according to which Jörg von Halspach who built this church made a deal with Satan to get the money to complete the church, and according the deal the church must be built without any visible windows. Von Halspach was clever though and designed the church so that there is a point in the from where not a single window can be seen. The Satan got furious of this and stamped his foot so that an imprint in the pavement of the hall is still seen :)
Address: Frauenplatz 1
Directions: Take the U or S-Bahn to 'Marienplatz'.
Michaelskirche
The stucco interior of Michaelskirche is vast, only St Peter's in Vaticane is bigger. There's a crypt beneath Michaelskirche and it has the tombs of several Wittelsbachs so this church is worth visiting.
Address: Neuhauser Strasse 52, Munich
Directions: Take the U or S-Bahn to station "Karlsplatz".
New Town Hall
New Town Hall is one of the most impressive buildings in Munich. Built between 1867 - 1909 in Flanders Gothic style. I'd say this is the older one but... no.
In the photo on the left side you can see The Glockenspiel which plays a few times a day, with music and dancers & soldiers. Timetables seem to vary from summer to winter so better check out before you go.
Address: Marienplatz
Old Town Hall
This is The Old Town Hall, even though many seem to mix it with the New Town Hall, probably because the new one looks older ;)
The Old Town Hall was built in the 15th century but just like so many other significant buildings in Munich, it was nearly destroyed in the WW II but rebuilt after the war.
Nowadays it serves also as a Toy Museum which was really charming so do pay a visit inside as well. Note the clock on the wall outside, it's special too.
Directions: Easternmost corner of Square Marienplatz.
