Malama na honu

Punaluu is a small bay with a black-sand beach. It is the most famous beach on the Big island. Green sea turtles come up to bask on the beach after they have their stomachs full of algae. This basking is a natural behavior unique to Hawaiian green turtles.

Green turtles are protected by both state and federal laws. It is illegal to touch them in any way, If you see them basking, please do not bother them. Just enjoy the beauty of these wonderful creatures.

i've experience black sand too. to be fair it was caused by the crap that flows out of middlesborough, uk rather than being natural

Loved the tips about the turtles, the black sand beaches. Still smiling about the "lucky ducks". We did see black beaches in Maui, but yours looks even better. Can't believe that others have not stopped by to read these pages.
