Speyside is a small seaside village on the windward coast of Tobago. It has much to offer birdwatchers and scuba divers. If you are just looking for a place to relax, then you can do that too. Goat Island and Little Tobago Island sit out in the bay. Goat island offers some exceptional diving experiences. Little Tobago is also known as Bird of Paradise Island because in 1909 its owner, wealthy British newspaperman William Ingram, imported 50 of these birds from New Guinea. Ingram did this in the hopes of protecting these birds from being killed for there beautiful feathers. The birds did well on the island for many years, until Hurricane Flora blew most of the birds out to sea in 1963. Many native birds now thrive on Little Tobago. |
