Penang was an ancient crossroad of traders from many corners of the world. Arabs brought Islam and perfumes, Europeans introduced western science and philosophy, Indians came with opium and cotton, and the Chinese arrived with tea and silk. This has resulted in a society of many cultures where many religions abound. Here you will find the largest Buddhist temple complex in Malaysia |
| | Chinese Temple The Goddess of Mercy Temple is the oldest temple in Penang. It was built in 1800 by the Hokkien and Cantonese Chinese communities. There were many worshippers here on the day that we took the picture because it was during Chinese New Year. |
| | Hindu Temple The Sri Maha Maeiamman, is the oldest Hindu temple in Penang, built in 1883. Hindu gods and goddesses are sculptured above the doorway. The gem incrusted statue of Lord Subramaniam is paraded annually during the Thaipusam festival. |
