Only after you make your way thru the vendors and touts, that follow you all the way to the steps of the temple, do you finally set eyes on this feat of stone. Then you realize that you are looking at one of the wonders of the world. Construction of Borobudur was said to have taken 75 years to complete. It consists of 1,500 reliefs and 500 statues of the Buddha. There are 72 meditating Buddha inside the bell-shaped stupas on the top terrace. The temple is made of grey andesite,a volcanic rock which was mined from the river beds. |

VeronicaG Thu Jul 9, 2009 22:54 UTC Borobudur is an amazing piece of architecture--those steps would demand strong legs! The view at the top was pretty. Too bad there wasn't a 'secret' way to get up and down without being seen. I think visitors must provide a large part of their income. | SPOORINDO_tours Fri Nov 21, 2008 17:43 UTC www.spoorindo.com | aussiejen Tue Mar 18, 2008 12:27 UTC We're hoping to visit here in May as a side trip from Bali. Busy checking out hotels etc. | TheWanderingCamel Wed Nov 14, 2007 22:16 UTC Lost worlds intrigue me - Borobudur's the closest to where I live but I've never been. Your page and photos inspire me to fix that. leyle |
