The most fascinating country on Earth?

by Charlie_UK - last update: Mar 23, 2006

Land of change

Few countries, bar perhaps in Eastern Europe, have changed so much lately as South Africa. But visitors here need to take all aspects of this with a pinch of salt. There is a process taking place, of integration, ending discrimination, empowering hitherto underpriveliged black and coloured people. However it is important to note this is a gradual thing. Anyone expecting that all is well after Apartheid ended is in for a shock. There is still racism, there is still inequality on a huge scale. The cities look for the most part like any first-world city, until you see the townships. Even the best of these are poor. At worst, they are vast shanty towns made of cardboard and corrugated iron. Unemployment is high and so is crime. In short, if you visit South Afgrica you need to keep your eyes, and your mind, open. As you do so you may be shocked by some of what you see. But you will also see beauty, hope, and fascinating history. You will learn, but you should have loads of fun too.
