The Gate to the Rio Dulce.

The biggest Guatemalan lake with a surface area of 589.6 km² and a maximum depth is 18 meters, is located east of Guatemala and drains into the Caribbean Sea. Easily reach by boat from Rio Dulce or by car, has some good beaches as Mariscos or Playa Dorada. The lake is ringed by a tropical rain forest and is home to a varied population of birds, fish and even manatees (fresh-water sea cow)

Castillo de San Felipe.

The main feature of the lake is the fortress of San Felipe de Lara, and old spanish castle built in 1595 to protect the spanish trade route from English and Dutch pirates. The fortress was taken and destroyed several times, until the final restoration in 1955.

Fishing.

The lake is famous for it´s fishing excursions up the many streams and waterways that lead into the lake
