"Oldest Mission in Chiquitania region." San Javier by euzkadi

This beautiful Jesuit Mission is the oldest in the Chiquitania circuit. Located in the small and dusty town of San javier (230 kms from Santa Cruz) was built in 1691.
The church was built later between 1749 and 1752 under the design of Martin Schimdt. It has an impressive Baroque façade with some details of European and Indigenous designs.

As in other missions around the circuit, the mission has a bell tower, constructed inside the mision not outside, in the middle of a nicely decorated cloister.

The mission has two chapels, decorated in the intrincated Baroque style, and some halls used as a museum. As the other seven misons of the area it was declarated World Heritage Site in 1982.
