I was able to go to Hartford thanks to the Hartford Open. Though I have no interest in golf, I went because I wanted to see the Mark Twain house. The first thing I noticed was that the city, with the exception of the southern area of the river, was extremly transient in that literally the "slums" were right across the street from exquisite mansions and government buildings. Really, I think that is part of the charm. After being mesmerized by the opulence of the Twain home, one can walk across the street and find a "hole-in-the-wall" diner for a bite. It was a chance to see the way progress has been mapped out over the years. Once an upscale writers community now is taken over by family stores and run down apartment buildings. |
