"Sleepy Szarvas" Szarvas by prleprle

Szarvas Travel Guide: 14 reviews and 60 photos

Szarvas is small and really pretty town in southeastern Hungary is Bekes County. There I spend several cold winter days and one great New Year’s Eve. Town has 18000 inhabitants and has typical Panonian architecture. Main attractions of the town are Arboretum, few elegant churches, small manor house and one of the larger Hungarian backwaters.

The Count Bolza family played a significant role in the development of the town. They had several mansions built (two can be visited today: one stands on the bank of the River Keres where there are copies of Roman and Greek statues in its park; the other is in "Anna" Grove). The foundation of the Arboretum is linked with their name, too. Arboretum must be great place to be at summer months but I visited it in December and January so there wasn’t much to see. Anyway, I had fun there!!!
