"Antarctica left a restless longing in my heart beckoning towards an incomprehensible perfection for ever beyond the reach of mortal man. Its overwhelming beauty touches one so deeply that it is like a wound".....Edwin Mickleburgh, from "Beyond the Frozen Sea"

That says it all!!!!!!!!

Early settlers to the whaling station at Grytviken, where Ernest Shackleton crossed from Fortuna Bay to Stromness on his heroic journey to save his men, brought live reindeer for food. About 13 still live high in the mountain. Our group hiked the last four miles of Shackleton's trek in a raging snow storm. Isn't GPS wonderful.

Our ship Explorer, docks at the old whale station at Grytviken where Shackleton summoned help to return to his 26 men stranded on Point Wild for 100 Winter days

Icebergs - "A Dime a Dozen"!

This one was over a . mile long and about 60 feet high. Probably broke off the Ross Ice Shelf and has been drifting for years. Small compared to many recent sightings, some of which are larger then countries. What you see of an iceberg is only 1/5 of its total size, the rest lies below the surface.

"I have seen the sea when it is stormy and wild, when it is quiet and serene; when it is dark and moody. And in all its' moods, I see myself." Martin Buxbaum

Amazing! You're right! I would love to go someplace like that...what a beautiful place. So undisturbed....so barren....It's amazing how Shakelton was able to navigate himself and his men out of that area.
