  • The Durango and Silverton Railroad offers a 90 mile round trip excursion through the rugged San Juan Mountains from Durango to Silverton. The scenery along the railroad is among the best in Colorado. The journey will take about 9 hours. There are 2 excursions at 8:30 am and 9:00 am and they return by 6:30pm at night. It is well worth the time and money. I highly recommend it!!! For more pictures and information please click here Durango & Silverton RR Scenery Travelogue

  • There were many nice shops in downtown Durango, including bookstores and clothing stores. Main Avenue had many bars and saloons, which is needed in the wild west. It is a great area to spend a couple of hours.

  • Durango is located on the Animas River. This river between Durango and Silverton was quite rough. I didn't see any rafters on my railroad excursion, so I don't know whether they allow rafting on that part of the river or it was too early. However, there was a hut on Main Ave offering rafting packages. i would imagine that you would have to be an expert rafter to go on the Animas River.

  • The city of Durango put a walkway along the Animas River throughout the city. It is a great place to take an evening walk.

  • This is the oldest hotel in Durango, which was finished in 1893. The hotel has a good collection of antique items from Durango's past. Included with the hotel is the famous Diamond Belle Saloon. Please note that I am listing this as a must see activity because I did not stay in this hotel.

  • There were many horse ranges in the area just north of Durango going along the Million Dollar Highway (US 550). Some of these ranches are guest ranches.

  • I am going to make a mention of Mesa Verde on this page. The entrance to the park is located about 38 miles west of Durango on US Route 160. Mesa Verde is the best kept Anasazi ruins. A great place to learn about ancient American culture. For more information, please go to my Mesa Verde page (Which will be completed on a later date)

Durango... brings visions of cowboys, horses, spurs, corals, and cattle. Great charm to the old west.
