I came here to teach English oral communication in one of the local high schools. It's a lovely little city (around 170,000) with plenty of parks in and around the city. It's not far to either Akan National Park or Daisetsuzan National Park (1.5-3 hours driving). Not only is the natural surroundings great but the people are fabulous.

The heat for the hot springs doesn't come from geothermal but from the heat produced by compression and decay of vegetative matter. In Japanese it is called a "morusen". There are apparently only two such hot springs in the world.
