Stephansdom: St.Stephens Cathedral

  • Vienna Stephansdom
  • St.Stephens cathedral

  • It is the most recognizable landmark in the city. This is where Mozart was married, and where his funeral was held.
Unfortunately, the church is located in front of tall buildings, for this reason it´s difficult to take a complete photo of it.-

    Stephansdom: A beautiful pulpit

  • The pulpit, by Pilgram
  • by pili

  • Inside the church, the pulpit, a work from 1514-15 by Anton Pilgram (who put his own relief portrait underneath it as his signature), is, in my opinion, the most beautiful work or art of the church.-

    Things To Do: Kunsthistorisches Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vienna - Kunsthistorisches Museum

  • A fantastic building itself, the Kunsthistorisches Museum is one of the greatest European museums of fine art. This museum houses many of the fabulous art collections gathered by the Habsburgs as they added new territories to their empire. One highlight is the fine collection of ancient Egyptian and Greek art. The museum also has works by many of the great European masters, such as Velásquez and Titian.-
If you love Jan Vermeer, like me, you can admire the painting "The Allegory of Painting" in one of
    galleries.-

    Belvedere: Belvedere Palace

  • Upper Belvedere Palace

  • It consists of two separate buildings, one at the foot of the hill and the other at the top. The Upper Belvedere houses a gallery of 19th- and 20th-century Viennese art, featuring works by Klimt (including his world-famous painting ‘The Kiss’), Kokoschka, Schiele, Waldmuller, and Makart; the Lower Belvedere has a Baroque museum together with exhibits of Austrian art of the Middle Ages.

    Karlskirche & Karlsplatz: Karlskirche
  • Tip Rating:
  • This church was built to honor Saint Charles Borromeo and thank God for delivering Vienna from the plague.
Two colums with an allegoric representation of the life of saint Borromeo are reminiscent of Italian Renaissance Trajan colum.-
Inside it is brightly lit in comparison to the Stephansdom. In my opinion is the most beautiful church in Vienna.-

    Hundertwasser: Hundertwasserhaus

  • Hundertwasserhaus

  • One of the city’s most popular tourist attractions, this is a house without straight lines or surfaces, completely assymetrical, with tortuous corridors, rounded-off corners, plants and trees. Friedensreich Hundertwasser, master of unconventional architecture, constructed this complex of 50 apartments in 1985.

Oper / Staatsoper: Vienna State Opera House (Staatsoper)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vienna Oper / Staatsoper
  • Vienna State Opera House
  • by pili
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • It was the first building erected on the Ringstraße when the old city's fortifications were torn down and replaced by massive public works projects. When the building opened on 25 May, 1869 the first performance was Mozart's Don Giovanni.-

During World War II (on March 12, 1945) the stage was destroyed by bombs and the building gutted by fire. The foyer, with frescoes by M. v. Schwind, the main stairways, the vestibule and the tea room were spared. Almost the entire décor and properties, the equipment for more than 120 operas with around 150,000 costumes were destroyed.
The reconstruction of the State Opera was carried out from 1948-1955.-
The State Opera can accommodate 2,209 people (previously 2,324), offering 1,642 seats and standing room for 567. The stage is one of the largest in Europe.

    Classical Music: Musikverein
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Musikverein was inaugurated by Emperor Franz Joseph in 1870.
The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's New Year's Concert, broadcast worldwide every year, is performed in the famous Golden Hall of the Musikverein. It is also the permanent seat of the orchestra.
I could enjoy a concert of the Mozarteum Orchestra in the Golden Hall.

    Hofburg: Neue Hofburg
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Hofburg was the residence of the Habsburgers till the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918. Today, this enormous complex houses the "Österreichische Nationalbibliothek" (National Library), the "Schatzkammer" (Imperial Treasury), the Collection of Musical Instruments, the Collection of Weapons, the "Museum für Völkerkunde" (Museum of Ethnography) and the famous "Spanische Hofreitschule" (Spanish Riding School). There are guided tours to the Imperial Apartments.-

It's an undeniably beautiful city Pilar. You must try to arrange a return trip during the Avent/Christmas season. The best is yet to come!
