"The Quadriga" - Berlin

"The Quadriga"

Brandenburg Gate "Quadriga" Brandenburger Tor Review

At the top of Brandenburg Gate there is a sculpture called “Quadriga” .
In 1806 when Napoleon passed beneath this gate as conqueror of Prussia, he ordered that this triumphal chariot should be sent to Paris to adorn one of his own arches of triumph there. But after Napoleon's downfall the Prussians brought it back to Berlin and restored the Goddess of Victory to her throne on the Brandenburg Gate.-

Brandenburg Gate - Berlin

Brandenburg Gate

Brandenburg Gate and Pariser Platz: Brandenburger Tor Review

Built in the 18th century as the entrance to the city of Prussian Kings, this imposing and beautiful structure has become the ultimate symbol of the division and reunification of Germany. This is a great point to start your walk in the eastern part of the city down the famous boulevard Unter den Linden.-

The Red Town Hall (Rotes Rathaus) - Berlin

The Red Town Hall (Rotes Rathaus)

The Red Town Hall (Rotes Rathaus) Rotes Rathaus Review

It is Berlin’s main town hall. It is located at Alexanderplatz, in the heart of Berlin. Because of its colour, the building is known colloquially as the "Rotes Rathaus" or "Red Town Hall".
During the Cold it served only as the town hall of East Berlin. Today the Rotes Rathaus is the center of authority, housing the offices of the mayor and the Berlin cabinet

The Television Tower - Berlin

The Television Tower

Alexanderplatz (The Television Tower) Alexanderplatz Review

The main attraction of the square is the Television Tower. It is by far the tallest structure in Berlin and can be seen from any part in Berlin. One of the attractions of the tower is the revolving café. A full rotation takes about half an hour, so it is possible to get a bird’s-eye view of the whole city while drinking a cup of coffee.-

The Weltzeituhr - Berlin

The Weltzeituhr

Alexanderplatz Alexanderplatz Review

The original Alexanderplatz was completely destroyed during the War. Its present day appearance is a good example of East German town planning: a huge, windswept pedestrian area surrounded by featureless 1960s high-rises.
In the picture, you can see the famous Weltzeituhr, showing the times around the world-

Sony Center - Berlin

Sony Center

Potsdamer Platz (Sony Center) Potsdamer Platz Review

The proyect by Sony may be the most outstanding one for being a large exterior elliptic space covered by a great dome of fiberglass.
Be carefull. It´s expensive. At least, much more expensive than Viena, for example.-

Potsdamer Platz - Berlin

Potsdamer Platz

Potsdamer Platz Potsdamer Platz Review

Before World War II, it once was the busiest traffic centers in all of Europe. Most of the buildings were destroyed during the heavy bombardments of Berlin. When the city then became divided, the square was cut in half, and after 1963, the Berlin Wall ran right through it, which caused the area to become totally desolate.
Now, there are many new office blocks, cinemas, a theatre and a huge shopping centre (the Arkaden), plus a luxury hotel, restaurants and several bars.-

bThe Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche

The Emperor Wilhelm Memorial Church Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche Review

The Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche commemorates the life of Kaiser Wilhelm I. It was was severely damaged by bombing during the Second World War and left it as a memory of the past. A new church and tower have been built around it.
The church sits in the middle of Kurfürstendamm: the premiere shopping district of Berlin.-

Garden of Exile - Berlin

Garden of Exile

Jewish Museum (The Garden of Exile) Jewish Museum Review

The Garden of Exile wants you to think about the disorientation that exile brings. Forty-nine columns are filled with earth in which willow oak trees grow. Forty-eight contain earth from Berlin and stand for the 1948 formation of the State of Israel. The forty-ninth central column is filled with earth from Jerusalem and stands for Berlin itself. The architect sought to replicate the feeling of being lost, starting in new land, the feelings of the exiled Jews in a foreign land, and that is exactly how you feel when you walk through this garden.-
