'Missed Saigon', because to me, 'Saigon' conjures up images of exotic imperialist grandeur. The legacy of the tremendously wide boulevards with huge traffic circles/roundabouts screams of what once was, but no longer is. For me personally, I 'missed Saigon' because I didn't really get to experience it. Ho Chi Minh City was one of my very first destinations on my quest to trot the globe. If I knew back then what I have experienced now, I would have gotten a lot more. But hey, we all had to start somewhere, and HCM certainly obliged in being a fascinating place to begin. My brother living there at the time certainly helped too. In retrospect, HCM was incredibly clean and tidy. Traffic though was another story. |
