This is the itinerary of the four weeks round trip I just finished (14June-14July 2002, with origin and end at Phoenix (AZ) Skiharbour airport). I travelled in a hired convertible, which is great to be in touch with the environment around. I traveled trough the less populated and more wild states of USA, and I followed the Nez Perce trail in its major part (please note that is only the upper "horizontal or West-East" part of my intinerary. That is the route the tribe of indians leaded by Chief Joseph followed under difficult circumstances in the summer of 1877, to try to scape from the US Army to Canada. The soldiers were leaded by general Oliver Howard, who was instructed by the government to put the indian in an ever shrunken reserve. They tried to scape, while fighting, all the way from their traditional homeland, in the Wallowa Valley (Oregon), through Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. They were finally captured and defeated by troops under the command of General Nelson Miles in the Bear Pow battle (Northern Montana), when they were only 40 miles (one day) from their save heaven in Canada, where they were going to join Sitting Bull's Sioux. Many chiefs, warriors, women and children died during those three terrible months. Many blue soldiers -poor european inmigrants in their major part- and civilian volunteers also died. It what was called "The Nez Perce war", a terrible tragedy for native americans. A story to be honored and never forgotten.
Enlarging the map is reccomended for details. It has a good definition.
