Where do I begin with Fairbanks? Everyone knows about the breath taking Northern Lights, the moose that wander up and down streets and hold up traffic, the ice that covers the town in a blanket of frozen wonder, the gold that seems to line the rivers and all the other splendid things Fairbanks is famous for. But, what I didn't know and I'm sure many others don't know either, is that Fairbanks offers a totally different way of life. I have lived in Fairbanks since March 1, 2002. I was waiting to do this page until I had time to get out and mingle with the locals and visit as many places as possible. I am by no means an "expert" on Fairbanks, but I will try to do my best at giving my new home a fair review. When you hear people quoting the phrase "The Last Frontier", they aren't kidding. Fairbanks is a laid back, friendly town. They don't bother much with frivolous details. Everything up here is about necesity and comfort. If you are familiar with the phrase "Sunday Drivers" you will understand it when I say this town is full of "Sunday Everything". Nothing is done in a rush. People enjoy their slow paced seemingly care-free lives. And being from Florida, that attitude took a while to get used to. But, now that I've been here a while it doesn't bother me NOT to have to be going a million miles an hour in every aspect of life. Things are simplified and basically you can sit back and enjoy life, rather than fight it tooth and nail. Even with all the minor "inconveniences" Fairbanks is all and all a nice town that can be as slow paced or as adventureous as you make it. |
