Colossi of Memnon: One solved mistery
  • Tip Rating:
  • Luxor Colossi of Memnon

  • The Collosi of Memnon sight was the first we aproached on the west bank of the Nile river . They are the gigant statues of Amenhotep III but they got their name after the Trojan hero Memnon , that's how Greeks interpreted their original name.
It was a very popular touristic spot in Roman period due to the fact that they were singing every morning. Unfortunately after the restauration in II century AD the sound they used to produce stopped forever.
Each statue is 21 m. high and made of a sandstone .

  • The Temple is devoted to Amon Ra and built as a mortuary temple for the great Queen. It is the only one made from the limestone in the New Kingdom period.
It has a three huge terraces. Some nicely preserved scenes with the original paint can be found here.

Valley of the Kings: Why Here?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Why the ancient rulers of Egypt choose this ground for their resting place? Various speculation were made. The place is well secluded but what, you can find such places all over Egypt. Than why? The most probable answer is becouse of the natural pyramide that looks over the valley.

Valley of the Kings: The entrance
  • Tip Rating:
  • Take your time and look at the 3D immage of the Valley and make a plan which tombs to visit.
The fees are: 55 eg.pounds for the entrance. The ticket includes a visit of 3 tombs.
70 Eg. pounds for Tut Ankh Amun tomb must be bought separately if you want to visit.
The little road train will drive you to the tomb area.

Valley of the Kings: The Tombs
  • Tip Rating:
  • As I wrote in the previous tip, you are allowed in 3 tombs of your choice. Some of them can be closed but still you will have a good choice. I visited Ramses III, Ramses IX and Amenemopet.
TAKING PICTURES INSIDE IS NOT ALLOWED, but are well kept in my mind. Look around carefuly and you will see some beautiful drawings on the walls and celings, some with original paint on.

    Karnak Temple: In General
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is the biggest temple complex in the world . It covers area of 100 hectares . The Temple is dedicated to god Amon Ra so it was a place of worship and spiritual center of the Ancient Egyptians. It was obligatory that every pharaoh add or repair something on it. The construction work began in 16c.BC. In next 2000 years about 30 pharaohs are "responsible" for its massive size. The Temple consists of 4 big parts but only one is open for the public.

Karnak Temple: The Avenue of Sphinx
  • Tip Rating:
  • When aproaching the Temple, you first pass by the raw of huge Criosphinxs ( the lion body and the ram head ). Ram head is a symbol of the god Amon Ra. The statue of the Pharaoh were placed between the Sphinx's front paws to show that god protect the ruler.
    They realy are impressive.

Karnak Temple: Templ of Amun-The first courtyard
  • Tip Rating:
  • This courtyard, as the most here in Karnak Temple, was dedicated to Amun . The most imprssive sights here are the Giant Papyrus Column, 21 m tall (originaly there werw 10 of them) , Barque Chapel of Seti II and Barque Chapel of Ramesses III . Some very nice ingraved scens are also worth exploring, even more if you have someone with you to explain their meaning.

Karnak Temple: The Great Hypostyle Hall
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is a worlds biggest sacred place and a architectual wonder. 134 enormous pillars make an unbelivable impression. 12 of them are taller then the others. They are 21 m tall and about 10 m around. The work began in the time of Ramses I and completed by his grandson RamsesII.
The pilars are all in papyrus shape, and nicely decorated . They were used to hold up the ceilings but only small part of that can be seen, as during the time most of the celings is gone.

    Karnak Temple: The Obelisks
  • Tip Rating:
  • These two obelisks are placed in small court next to the hypostile hall. The smaler and older one was erected in the time of Tuthmosis I and it is about 21 m high and weighs about 140 tons. The bigger one is 27 m tall and weighs 320 tons and it is the only remaining obelisk of Queen Hatshepsut. It is made from pink granite from Aswan in very short period of time. It remains a mistery how that was achived.
