(Cinque Terre)

Vernazza is so tiny and small, but very picturesque and cute, it seems like a fairy tale village, at the banks of the sea on the rocks, where the waves are dashing...
It is the most popular among the Cinque terre villages, and the most gracious one.
Its name comes from "Gens Vulnetia", an ancient Roman family to which the slaves belonged and that once freed, founded the village.
The houses of Vernazza, of the same type as the house-towers of Riomaggiore, Manarola and Monterosso, covered by a dense system of narrow alleys called "carruggi" and located on various levels, offer always new corners and views.
Other architectural elements that characterise the village include the complex defence system that the Genoese organised to protect Vernazza from the Saracens, from the barbaric invasions, from all their enemies.
The port was the only one in the Cinque Terre to be useful in the battle against the people of Pisa, and the fortification above it, the castle was used as an observation point, and a place to shoot from, as the area is not easily accessible, except from the sea.
Vernazza is full of tourists, especially Americans, so you can expect things to be pricy pricy!
It is a very lovely and exciting place, and a definite must see, the pearl of Liguria!

Photos brought back fond memories! Return this October to see many changes over ten years. Travelled only by train - missed the over view shots that you posted. We also missed the grotto. Stay this time in Vernazza will search for the grotto!

The only thing I knew was the name of Vernazza but not how it looked like. It is great ! You have breathtaking views. An excellent page and you have found your tower ;-)
