Pompey's Pillar: Serapeum
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the very rare and few remained relicts of the antique era, the place of the temple of Serapis, a new deity. Some people believe that there was the place of the old biblioteca alexandrina, but not a lot.

    Pompey's Pillar: Serapeum column
  • Tip Rating:
  • A single monolite column of granite, one of the landmarks, and the heart of the locality.
It was built by the Roman emperor Diocletian in 297 AD. It's called Pompey's pillar.
Here are some things that were written about Serapeum in antique world:

"Its splendour is such that mere words can only do it an injustice but its great halls of columns and its wealth of lifelike statues and other works of art make it, next to the Capitol, which is the symbol of the eternity of immemorial Rome, the most magnificent building in the whole world. It contained two priceless libraries."

Ammianus Marcellinus, The Later Roman Empire (XXII.16)

"employed in its execution a mixture of various materials. For he had filings of gold, and silver, and lead, and in addition, tin; and of Egyptian stones not one was wanting, and there were fragments of sapphire, and hematite, and emerald, and topaz. Having ground down and mixed together all these ingredients, he gave to the composition a blue colour, whence the darkish hue of the image."

    Exhortation to the Heathen (Protreptikos)

Down town area & cornich: street scene
  • Tip Rating:
  • Alexandria is full of beautiful gardens, fountains and impressive architecture. It has a charm different from other Egyptian cities, it's somehow "European" in a way, totally Mediterranean (of course :)). There are many palms and fantastic corners to rest, have a walk (the big promenade stretches out along the coast throughout entire city!)
It's a city that charmed me the most in Egypt! Very lovely!

This is the entrance to the gardens.

    Beaches: The Mediterranean
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Mediterranean sea is spectacular at Alexandria! Along entire city there is a loooooong main avenue, and a promenade, where the sea is always wild and wavy, it is always windy. But it is so beautiful!

new Library of Alexandria: The New Alexandrine Library
  • Tip Rating:
  • An architecture miracle, it's the most impressive building I have ever seen, both inside and outside! It is so amazing that I was breathless! There is entire book about the new library, and my photos don't do the justice.
It is situated in the place of the old famous Biblioteca Alexandrina from the antique times.

Fully agree with your intro comments - I also loved Alexandria and thought it was really underrated. Guess how I ended up here, BTW... ;-)

Not only did Diocletian built the Serapeum column but he built also the city walls of Grenoble, my home town, and not to forget his famous palace in Split. He was a great builder all over Europe !

Have dreamed of visiting Alexandria ever since I first read "Justine" - the book that defines the city. Nice page - Justine is the first of 4 books that make up Lawrence Durrell's Alexandrai Quartet - fantastic reading. leyle
