people of Alexandria: cute kids
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: This little girlwas very friendly and cute, she was posing for me to take a picture of her! In general, kids are very friendly and playful in Egypt!
This was in front of the beautiful white mosque near the shore.

    walk around: the peer
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Don't miss a beautiful walk by the peer! It's something most enjoyable, with the scent of the sea and freshness coming from the Mediterranean, and palm trees along the way. There is a lot of wind and big waves always (at least when I've been there), but it just adds to the atmosphere. It's a very relaxing and pleasurable walk.

    walk around: the lighthouse

  • Favorite Thing: Not far from the place where the famous ancient lighthouse of Faros was situated, there is another little one. It is very nice to walk around.

    life in Alexandria: buildings
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: A building near Serapeum. You can see it across the monument, and it looks very vivd and lively, although not well kept. in general, I've seen a lot of poverty in Egypt. Suburbs don't even have hygiene on the decent level, there is a lot of trash everywhere and lots of dirt. But the center is very well kept however. Anyway, a lot of people live in these houses, not very comfortable...

    walk around: The Library
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Alexandrine Libarary is different from every single angle of view, you can go around and you won't find the same view! Extraordinary architecture!

Fully agree with your intro comments - I also loved Alexandria and thought it was really underrated. Guess how I ended up here, BTW... ;-)

Not only did Diocletian built the Serapeum column but he built also the city walls of Grenoble, my home town, and not to forget his famous palace in Split. He was a great builder all over Europe !

Have dreamed of visiting Alexandria ever since I first read "Justine" - the book that defines the city. Nice page - Justine is the first of 4 books that make up Lawrence Durrell's Alexandrai Quartet - fantastic reading. leyle
