My Second Time in Omsk

by blaird - last update: Feb 6, 2003

Both of my trips to Omsk were not typical tourist trips. I visited Omsk with a friend that grew up there, so we visited her parents and friends.

Omsk is an industrial city, but I found it nice because of the people. The city has economic problems, could use a facelift, but has an international airport, a nice downtown area, and is along the Trans-Siberian Express line (I flew in).

The city developed from an early fort along the river banks about 250 years ago (that makes it older than theUS!)

I have converted my travelogues into Must See Activities, as I feel these better fit the new VT. The picture above is from the dacha (garden plot) of my friend's parents.

Happy B'day! Read with great interest about your trip to Omsk, some of the customs are familiar to me. Banya is like our sauna and we take shoes off when entering somebody's home. Being able to visit a local home gives you much more than being a tourist.
