Beijing is one of those cities which inspires your imagination. Once can only begin to imagine how it must have been like a century ago when a mere sight inside of the Forbiden City could have gotter a normal person killed.
There are countless of nearby sights worth your time. I've posted some of the highlights.

As a word of warning on Beijing and the sourounding areas, weather can and is a factor on your visits. The city is known to be covered with sand storms for several days or weeks at times during the year. Check the weather and climate graphs before visiting this otherwise lovely city.

Nearly 8 years now since I was in Beijing - it was changing fasrt then - what's it like now I wonder? I agree about Simitai - strenuous, but worth all the effort. leyle
