Coles and Woolworth: Supermarkets

There are several first rate supermarkets and stores in Australia. Coles, Woolworth, and IGA are the most common supermarkets out there. IGA is slightly more expensive then Coles and Woolies. I prefer the last two as they offer good quality at cheap prices. You can sometimes buy snacks and cheap stuff at Crazy Clark Stores.

What To Buy: Both Coles and Woolworth sell excellent reusable shopping bags that may save you stoprage space and hassle out of your luggage. Check them out!

Victoria Market (Melbourne): Largest Market in Victoria
  • Tip Rating:
  • Name of Shop: Victoria Market (Melbourne)

The following day, I visited the historic Victorian Market. Tagged as one of the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, it doesn't disappoint. Imagine a market that can take you back in time to a period where the merchants came to town to sell their many goods and products. You can buy anything from inexpensive souvenirs, to cheap veggies/fruits, to impressive works of art, to clothes, and much more. This market has it all. To top it off, it was one block from the hostel!

King Cross Car Market: Go shopping for a used car

An area a lot of backpackers and long term travelers encounter is the shady neighborhood of King Cross, where you can actually see a bit of everything. I actually felt totally safe there at all times, but some prefer to miss this place at night. My main reason for going was to shop for a car at the infamous King Cross Car Market. It was an arduous process taking over 3 days of talking with shady characters and looking at total junk-on-wheels vehicles. In the end, I came away with a vehicle. One of the advantages of using this market is that they ran through all the paperwork and requirements on purchasing a car.

My friend Helen (hailun in VT) gave me a tour of downtown Sydney when we came across this wonderful market in Sydney’s oldest neighborhood, the Rocks. If you're into the historic aspects of Sydney, then you'll enjoy the old buildings in and around the Rocks. One can find all sorts of arts and crafts in this Sunday market.
