Ruins: Macchu Picchu
  • Tip Rating:
  • At times, you forget that Machu Picchu was not the Inca capital; Cusco was, just from the magnitude of the site. We had our tour of the site at 8 AM. After a while though, I just got so overwhelmed with the incredible masonry techniques in the Imperial Inca Construction that I just started breathing in the site by myself and totally ignored what the guide said. I just prefer to see the ruins and then to think about them. It took me a while to realize the tour had ended for I was always lagging behind. I must have walked another hour or so in the ruins by myself.

  • Then, I hiked up Huayna Picchu, the famous tall peak that appears in the pictures. The hike took me 25 minutes, although a more realistic time for the unfit would have been 1 or more hours. Let me tell you, the hike there is worth it. The view on route and on the top of the ruins and the surroundings is amazing.

Huayna Picchu: Temple of the Moon
  • Tip Rating:
  • On the way down, I took the other path and walked downhill to the Temple of the Moon. In reality though, this are ruins in and on themselves. Since the ruins are not restores like the ones I saw on the trails and Machu Picchu, most have the same look as Hiram Bingham when he rediscovered Machu Picchu in 1911. The total walk from the deviation of the trail to Huayna Picchu to the Temple of the moon and back took me 1.5 hours.

    Aguas Caliente: Returning to Cusco
  • Tip Rating:
  • I finally made it back to Machu Picchu by early afternoon. Since it started poring rain, I opted not to walk to Aguascalientes, and took a bus ;). From there, I took an afternoon train back to Cusco. The train took 4 hours, but they were short thanks to the fellow travelers I met on the train from the US and Sweden.
