I took a bus from Cartagena to Santa Marta. I actually didn't stayed in town, opting for the more attractive small town of Taganga, a small fishing town near Santa Marta. I stayed in this lovely bed n breakfast called la Casa de Felipe. The French owner was very helpful in arranging tours and scuba dives. The town itself has not much to show, but the surrounding area has enough stuff to keep you busy for weeks. Make sure you see my Taganga, Parque Tayrona, and Ciudad Perdida pages for more info on what do near Santa Marta.

The trek to Ciudad Perdida sounds great, but unfortunatly I don't think I can get the time for it.
I did the same bus trip and really enjoyed it.
Thanks for remembering Libertador Bolívar; interesting place.
