Favorite Thing: a good guidebook for a bicycle trip along the american west coast is the lonely planet guide: cycling USA west coast.
it's very useful and has only a few mistakes in it.

there is also another guide by a guy called rob kirkendal.
i met several bikers using that one and it seems equally good.

it's one of the biggest party nights of the year in america and it's garenteed to produce a big hangover.

one of the reasons why i chose to cycle the american pacific coast was all the interesting people i had come to know through this site.

the trees are big enough to hold your bike.

Favorite Thing: there is a marked bike route all the way from the canadian to the mexican border.
it's mostly on small countryside roads or roads with bike paths.
very worth taking.

Favorite Thing: this sign was posted on the road one day when i drove down highway number one.
i went in to the shop and found that a guy i met the day before at a campsite had bought me and 3 girls from the same campsite beer and left them inside the shop and told the woman to hand them over to us if we saw the sign.
i found that a very nice gesture and a very original idea.

Favorite Thing: when i biked through south east asia a couple of years earlier i spend some time biking with a very cool guy from santa rosa-california.
unfortubatly i lost his e-mail and adress and i also forgot his surname.
i knew he was a deputy sheriff though, so i stopped a police car one day in northern california and asked the guy inside if he knew a guy called michel in the police force, who once cycled through vietnam and cambodia.
the guy worked at the same substation as michael so i get in touch with him and spend a week in santa rosa hanging out with him and his freinds.

Favorite Thing: cycling along the coast means that you tens to hang on to the cliffs of the often very dramatic coastline of california when not visiting the little towns along the way.
many of these little towns are very pleasant and have a maritime history.
small stops along the way are very recommended to relax and get to know that part of america.
