First Appearances Having visited Charleston, SC just days ago, I decided to finally make the 45 minute drive to see my new state capital. Having been told that it was similar in some ways to the very classy Charleston, I had high expectations, as you can imagine. However, after stepping onto Main St., I was just a tad disappointed with the touristy feel of the street and its souveneir shops. So, I quickly walked the few blocks that it occupied between the State House and the water, giving the shops a cursory glance. |
State House When I happened upon the State House, though, my view of Annapolis changed instantly as this very charming town. It's a beautiful 18th century structure around which there is the State House Circle and a number of roads coming off of it like spokes. Each road held something different to discover. |
A Quiet Street Maryland Avenue was of particular interest, as it was much quieter, had fewer people, and, in general, lacked the frenetic feel of Main St. There are much fewer shops here, consisting of a handful of art galleries, a coffee shop, and a few other interesting-looking stores. My mind having been thoroughly changed by the pretty State House and Maryland Avenue, I decided to give Main Street another chance. Walking along it again, it really wasn't so bad! There are indeed touristy shops, but there are some interesting ones mixed in there as well (like a great wine shop!), and the view walking in either direction couldn't be beat. In one direction is the waterfront, while the other direction affords views up the hill towards the State House and the skyline of Annapolis. On a perfect day like this day was, Annapolis is a perfect place in which to get lost and wander about. It is so very historic that every turn will offer you a famous building like the State House, the Naval Academy, or any number of interesting shops or galleries. I will definitely return and see what else there is to discover! |
