"Hello Moto" - A Cambodian Journey

by PA68 - last update: Sep 24, 2003

The average traveller to Cambodia seems to arrive, do a tour of the temples of Angkor and then dash down to Phnom Penh for a quick visit to the Killing Fields before dashing off to Vietnam or Thailand.

I found a country worth spending a little bit of time in and would recommend others to do the same.

My trip took me on a loop of the Tonle Sap lake. First I travelled from from Bangkok to Siem Reap and the Temples of Angkor. From there I travelled by boat to Battambang and then by road to Phnom Penh stopping at Khompong Chnang along the way. Then it was down to the south-coast with stops at Sihanoukville and Kampot. After returning to Phnom Penh I journeyed up the other side of the Tonle Sap with stops at Kompong Cham and Kompong Thom before spending a night in Siem Reap once more on my return journey to Bangkok to fly home.

I should also point out that when I visited there was much hullaballoo going on in the media about SARS. Tourism in Cambodia was down 40% from the previous year and everyone from hotels to moto drivers were suffering because of it. I'd encourage everyone to ignore the media scaremongering and take a serious look at the risk to yourself before cancelling visits to these countries. It has a serious impact on the livelihood of some already very poor people. Ok, lecture over. hope you enjoy my page.........

Please also stop by and check ou tmy Phnom Penh page. It doesn't have much but there are some photos I didn't have room for here.
